Where is Tornnis located?Tornnis is a kingdom that encompasses a big island and some smaller ones around it. For the location of the cities and main points mentioned in the story, see the map on page PLACES. There are no scientific records of where Tornnis is located in the galaxy; neither is it known what is beyond The Sea. Explorers go on their ships and never return. This is a Secret of Life for the people of Tornnis, and they live without that knowledge, as well as people on Earth live with the fact that they don’t know the exact origins of their planet or what happens to them after death. These issues also affect the people of Tornnis, as well as other Secrets of Life, and the people of Tornnis sometimes get into existential crises, embark on searches without effective results, die and disappear in the process, and never get a definitive answer. Many things on Earth are explained by the existence of a “superior force”, which some call God. In Tornnis there is not a religion in itself. There are theories, oh, many theories! But overall, the force worshiped by the people of Tornnis, for most of its history, is the Star [1]. Some believe in the Invisible, an entity that is in everything, but let’s not go too deep into religion, because in Tornnis that is not very important. Magic brought many answers and solutions, although not necessarily to the Secrets of Life. It gave people not only new beliefs and a totally different way of living, but also the possibility of venturing into another world: Earth. Nobody knows if Tornnis is a planet apart, or if it is part of the Milky Way, or even if it is a different dimension within Earth. It is mostly believed that the latter hypothesis is true, as the Sun and the Moon appear in Tornnis just like on Earth (that does not mean, though, that there is only one sun and one moon in the entire universe, but let’s not get into endless reveries about the Secrets), as well as the way of counting hours, and the months and the seasons, for example. The term Earth is used here, then, to refer to the dimension in which there are humans who have never experienced magic. Reaching Earth through magic was actually an accident that had the participation of a really smart and crazy wizard thousands of years ago. He worked for the king of that time, and eventually he arrived at this unknown land that is now called Earth. At the time it was probably not even called Earth, and the men and women of the place were very primitive, but not as much as the men and women of today’s Earth think. The wizard met a woman and fell in love with her, but that is a story for another occasion. Summarizing: Where is Tornnis? Nobody knows — and they don’t care, to be honest (still, keep in mind that there are always exceptions). Magic enabled them to build a bridge to Earth. The people of Tornnis are human and have existed for thousands of years, and even though there are endless theories and no evidence of truth, there are also no records of when the first man or woman of Tornnis was born, or even when the main island was formed in the middle of a sea whose limits are unknown. As we don’t want to get into philosophical, geological, anthropological, scientific and religious deep questionings, let’s stop here. [1] There is more in the book (The Girl of the Tower) about the Star and its role in the history of Tornnis, but if you have not read the book yet and want very much to know ahead of time, here is a short summary. The Star was what the name says, a star that fell in Tornnis many, many years ago, spreading its mysterious power, which remained in the atmosphere and allowed a manipulation of the environment different from anything Tornnis had ever seen until then. Today we call it magic. The magic dissipated after ten years, when everyone was more than accustomed to living with it, and when chaos erupted, the king of that time found a solution, a new way to provide magic to the people. What he did you discover by reading The Girl of the Tower, the first installment of the Tornnis Trilogy. |
Why do the people of Tornnis live without technology and don’t care much about science, geology, anthropology...?This is a question that humans from Earth may ask themselves when they hear stories about Tornnis. “Why is it so medieval?”. Well, I guess a word by itself explains it all. Magic. In a world with magic, would you care about science, technology and all those complicated mechanisms we use to make life easier? And even for understanding the world, understanding magic above all becomes essential to scholars, as it is in it they see the meaning of all the special things they have and are. |
What language is spoken in Tornnis? How can they communicate with people on Earth? In Tornnis the language used to communicate is called kamnai which means “language”, so in the books you won’t find the word transcribed like this, only its translation, which, to be understood by you, the reader from the Earth, is in English. Kamnai is spoken throughout the whole island. To communicate with the people on Earth, in the rare (and forbidden, authorized only by the king) case of it being needed, the people of Tornnis speak the native language of the place: English, Spanish, Portuguese, German... When you live in a world with magic, there are very few things that aren’t possible. For instance, drinking a potion that allows you to understand any dialect you have contact with is perfectly logical for a person from Tornnis. Not that it’s easy to obtain such potion, but the king always has a few bottles in his private stock for when he needs to send someone to Earth. For those who have read the book and were wondering how Alyson could understand her colleagues in Tornnis, this is the answer: the prince is a discreet thief when necessary. Note: The ancient language, also known as the “wizard’s language” (wimznai) is used only for magic purposes. It should not be applied to general communication, since it has power. It makes things happen. |
And how was the language of wizards created?Tornnis has not always been unified in the current language (kamnai). The founders of Delrok — the first people to learn how to control the magic that had just appeared in the world — came from a wanderer tribe with a very peculiar culture. They had their own language, and just by talking, as one does with an animal one wants to tame, they discovered how to do things with magic. They tried, observed and concluded what worked and what did not. They studied the sounds, their frequencies, what seemed to be more effective, and they even created new words derived from the ones they already knew to name the things they wanted to describe and there was no correspondence in their dialect. In the end, it became a language that magic could understand and respond to immediately. They wrote their rules and thus the language of the wizards was created. All new apprentices, from different backgrounds, began to use the language, and it was developed to the point it became unused for communicative purposes. Eventually, over the years and reigns, Tornnis got unified in a common language, and the language of wizards remained restricted to Delrok for generations, becoming the most efficient way to order the magic. |
